COACH FS (Formation Skydiving) LEVEL 2
Skydive University’s Level 2 Formation Skydiving Coach Course is our advanced one-on-one coaches’ program, which picks up from the “USPA ISP” focus of diving, docking on a formation, and separating to a safe distance from the formation––to more focus on sequential and advanced flying skills.
The course goes beyond the basic safety information and abilities needed to complete the remainder of skills necessary to become a proficient body flyer. The skills strengthened on this level are neutral (mantis), forward and back, downward and upward, and tracking. Additional skills covered include: center turns, lateral (sideward) movements, and superpositional movements.
The Level 2 course introduces additional teaching exercises, more psychological tools and advanced skill analysis. A link to wind tunnel coaching is also included. The course is strictly focused on coaching and coaching application.
There are no written exams in this course: The rating privileges allow the coach to instruct advanced one-on-one and small group skills––as well as teach the skills needed to be a proficient Load Organizer in formation skydiving (FS). All rated Coach 2's have also realized the advantage of achieving this level when moving on to Instructional courses such as AFFI or Tandem, both in teaching ability and skill strength.
The prerequisites to attend the USPA/SDU Level 2 are:
- Be 18 years old
- Membership with a National organization
- USPA C-license or FAI equivalent
- Have completed 200 jumps

Course Evaluations
Perform 5 Evaluation Jumps
These jumps can be performed as either 2 way or 4 ways, the following is a description of evaluation jumps:
Evaluation drill # 1 - Free flown; 4 way star exit (no grips) built within ten (10) seconds. The sequence is: star, accordion, opposed helix, star repeat, etc. Note: you must complete at least 10 points within the 35 seconds working time – or 25 overall from exit.
Evaluation drill # 2 - Free flown; 4 way star exit (no grips), built within 10 seconds. The sequence is: star, clone pair turns 360 degree, back to the star, alternate clone pairs, and alternate turns to left and right, repeat, etc. Note: you must complete at least 10 points, 5 360’s each.
Evaluation drill # 3 - Free flown; 4 way star exit (no grips), built within 10 seconds. The sequence is: star, clone pair turns 180 degree to bipole and turn back to star, alternate clone pairs, and alternate turns to left and right, repeat, etc. Note: you must complete at least 12 points, six 180’s each.
Evaluation drill # 4 - Free flown; 4 way star exit (no grips), built within 10 seconds. The sequence is: star, clone pair side slides to 3/4 bipole, side slide again to 3/4 bipole, side slide back to star, alternate clone pairs, and repeat. Note: the setup pair must build a two way star, maintain levels and heading during the side slides. You must complete at least 12 points, 6 sideward moves each.
Evaluation drill # 5 - Free flown star exit (no grips), built within 10 seconds. The sequence is: star, clone pair side slides to 3/4 bipole, side slide again with a 360 degree turn to inside and finish at the 3/4 bipole, side slide back to star, alternate clone pairs, and repeat. Note: the setup pair must build a two way star, maintain levels and heading during the side slides. You must complete at least 8 points, 4 superpositional moves each.
Conduct a Presentation
Candidates will teach either Session 4 or 5 from the Basic Body Flight manual. The presentation will take approximately 45 minutes. The key issues are:
- 1. Conduct the motor skills drills by the required repetition and holding times
- 2. Immediately correct any student body position errors that may occur. There are a number of other criteria scored in the presentation that are averaged in the total final score. The two key points must receive a passing score for the lesson to be passed.
Skill Analysis Test
The skill analysis test will require the viewing of one actual jump, completing an observation plan and a detailed analysis of all positive and improvement points of the students performance. The test is one of the coaches “eye” and not limited to the improvement points the coach feels they would debrief the student on.
